My decision to run for City Council is based in part on a strong desire to work hard to improve my community, and also on a strong belief that Oakland can be a prosperous, vibrant community for all of its residents.
I have lived in the city of Oakland more than five decades, and I know how the quality of life has declined over the years. As a youth, I recall how we had decent schools, numerous recreational amenities, and basic services IN our neighborhoods. I remember that our family was able to shop for our daily necessities within our city, and that we felt that local businesses were contributing to the local economy. Crime was under control, and our neighborhoods were reasonably safe places to live, work and shop.
Now, over the past 20 years, the quality of life in our city has declined precipitously. We are in the throes of a violent crime crisis, our schools are not retaining and educating the majority of our children, and most of our daily needs and services must be found not only outside of our community, but beyond the city limits as well. Our city leaders have mortgaged our future and ignored the needs of the people who live and work here.
The time has come when we must take back control of our government and use it to benefit all of the citizens of our city. District 7 needs a strong, community voice in City Hall, and I am committed to being your advocate. I will fight to bring equitable development, clean and safe streets, expanded employment opportunities, preservation of our open space and industrial lands and basic services back to our district. We deserve leadership that will put the needs of the citizens first.
